Does the Covid-19 have a greater impact on BRICS Stock Markets?
This study examines the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on BRICS stock markets. In other words, this study observes the stock market volatility and association among BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) stock markets during the period of Covid-19. BRICS economies are significant in modern times as the economic growth rates will be higher than the growth rates of G-6 economies in the near future. But the year 2020 has damaged this propensity on account of market volatility and fragile macroeconomic fundamentals. This study is based on monthly time-series data from January 2020 to March 2021. Descriptive statistics, correlation statistics, GARCH models, ADF unit root test, Johansen cointegration, and vector error correction model have been used for analysing the data. Correlation statistics disclosed that BRICS stock markets are positively correlated with each other during this period. ADF unit root test result corroborates that BRICS stock markets are non-stationary at level but stationary at 1st difference. GARCH test result supports that BRICS stock markets except South Africa are highly volatile during the study period and there is no leverage effect in BRICS markets. VECM test results demonstrate that there is no long-run causality running from Brazil, India, and China to other markets but there is a short-run causality running from Russia and South Africa to other markets under study. This study suggests that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of bad news has a bigger influence on the stock markets.
